Diamond Basics

Your diamond takes an incredible journey from the core of the Earth to your one-of-a-kind wedding ring. Formed deep within the mantle of Earth under extreme temperatures and pressure, diamonds are raised to the surface by deep-source volcanic eruptions. The slightest variation in this process results in graphite instead of a diamond. Every diamond in the world is unique, and as the hardest gemstone on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, scoring a 10, a diamond’s durability is unsurpassed.

Diamonds arrive to the Earth’s surface in rough form and go through expert cutting, grading, and polishing to prepare the diamond for an engagement ring. Diamonds are rated by a series of qualities known as the 4 Cs – cut, color, clarity and carat. The 4 Cs is a universally recognized method of diamond grading, created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), to standardize the classification of diamond quality. All 31Four diamonds are hand-selected by our artisans and GIA certified. To learn more about the 4 Cs, visit here.

In addition to providing only with GIA certified stones, 31Four works with vendors that adhere to the Kimberley Process - a process established in 2003 to ensure that diamond purchases are conflict-free. We have chosen Kimberly Process diamonds to be in line with our Catholic faith. We are also happy to work with you in choosing a lab-grown diamond or an alternate gemstone for your rings.
